What Is Harmonic Astrology? A Friendly Nerdy Explanation

The Old Farmer’s Almanac recently included me in their roundup of types of astrology, and it made me want to answer the question properly: what actually is harmonic astrology? Read the Almanac feature here.

“The chart lives like literal music; it is alive, resonating, with advanced symmetries, subatomic particles, strings, and waveforms. You can feel it all, and the math is simple. It’s a refreshing and stunningly accurate form of astrology.”
— Clarissa Dolphin

Here’s the explanation I give my students.

Harmonic Astrology is an interpretable network of vibrations and resonances

That’s my one-sentence definition. Everything in the universe vibrates and your natal chart is a snapshot of those vibrations at the moment you arrived. I think of the chart as a radio tuned into the frequencies, wavelengths, symmetries and subatomic structures of the entire universe.

Same chart, different lens

Harmonic astrology uses the same zodiac and natal chart you already know. Your natal chart is the 1st harmonic. If you’ve had a reading from an astrologer, nothing about the fundamental calculations of your chart changes, we just look at it more closely. Harmonics puts the chart under a microscope, such that we can see molecular elements that the naked eye can’t spot.

Your chart is a circuit board

I like to say harmonic astrologers are the electricians, electrical engineers or musicians of astrology. We view the natal chart as a circuit board, and we detect and decode what’s running through it: hidden symmetries, connections, notes, shapes and patterns that are easy to miss and even impossible to see with a standard read.

Infinite zodiacs in one chart

This is the part that makes me overflow with nerd glee. A single chart contains infinite zodiacs. The chart is literal infinity. The 9th harmonic, for example, is nine zodiacs. And the way to find a harmonic is simple: the denominator of an aspect tells you which harmonic it belongs to.

Minor aspects matter

In harmonic astrology, minor aspects are just as important as major ones. They’re often where the most specific information lives.

What’s different with Harmonics

  • Houses are irrelevant

  • There are no rulerships

  • All 10 planets + more in play, you can literally use any planet, point or celestial object you want

The math is simple

Honestly. If you can handle fractions, you can learn this. The math is the easy part, and learning to interpret what you find is the fun part. You do NOT need to even have interest in learning math to be a good Harmonic Astrologer, to be clear though.

Try this tonight

Start noticing the “vibes” in your life: the people, places and moments that feel like they’re on a certain frequency. That’s the first step in learning to read resonance and it’s one of the workbook prompts in my course. If you can pick up on vibes, then you can read harmonics.
